meditation 1

I ask that you give up everything to meditate on peace.
If you could have peace by giving up your possessions
then all the deer of the forest would be freed from rebirth.
If you could have peace by shaving your head,
then why haven't sheep been freed either?
Some submerge themselves every morning and evening
They will not be any more liberated than the frogs.
What use is chanting, penance, fasting or bowing to a statue
If your heart loves duality?
Set aside your greed and attachment to material things.
Set aside desire, anger and ego.
My Brothers and Sisters
Remember the words of Kabir
Keep devotion in your heart
With every action and word
And then you will meet the True Lord
And your soul will come to peace.

Meditation -- 3

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
Do not believe in anything simply because many say it.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything simply on the authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.
But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason
and is for the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it
and live up to it.

Art, Torture and Education

Most people think of art as a luxury, but in this episode we learn about two different projects that use art as a basic tool in their work. We will hear about different art forms from writing to painting and why people have turned to artwork to solve serious problems in their communities.
The first is a group called "The Decimation of Public Education." This is an art exhibit featuring work by students, parents and concerned artists that show lawmakers how public funding cuts have hurt the community. Amy Hines is collecting art that tells people about education and how politicians should do something about its apparent destruction. Anyone who wants to donate art of their own can reach her at yamshines@gmail.com. If you are near the California state capital you can see the art for yourself as it still on display for a little while longer at Bistro 33 in Davis California at 226 F St (http://www.bistro33.com/bistro33_davis/).
The other project, "Owl and Panther," takes on the problems that are unique to children of torture survivors. Some refugees have come to the United States to get away from torture. Their children are not used to a new country and have trouble telling others about what they lived through. Marge Pellegrino tells us how they use different forms of art to treat the trauma of growing up with torture in their family. Parents started bringing their children to this program in 1995 and now they serve communities from around the world. Read more about this group at http://www.owlandpanther.org/ and get more information by writing to owlandpanther@gmail.com. Other art organizations are especially encouraged to contact them.

Using Art to Help Tortured Families

The "Owl and Panther" project, funded by the Hopi Foundation, takes on the problems that are unique to children of torture survivors. Some refugees have come to the United States to get away from torture. Their children are not used to a new country and have trouble telling others about what they lived through. Marge Pellegrino tells us how they use different forms of art to treat the trauma of growing up with torture in their family. Parents escaping Central America started bringing their children to this program in 1995 and now they serve communities from around the world including Somalia, Nepal and Bhutan.
The National Coalition of Arts Therapies reports that psychiatric patients have been noted throughout history to have an almost irresistible urge to create art. They consider art therapy as an effective treatment for mental health, rehabilitation and education. It is based on the assumption that visual symbols and images are the most accessible and natural form of communication to the human experience.

India's Genetically Engineered Question

The small farm is a standard figure in India’s agricultural history, but the image is changing from the hard working successful farmer to one who can't get out of debt. The large number of farmer suicides tell a tragic story with more than 150,000 in the last 10 years. The government tried to help by redefining the term "farmer" to reduce the number.
But what are the reasons? To start, excess food supply has decreased crop values. Also, lenders no longer give easy unsecured loans, taking away short term liquidity options. The Green Revolution gets mixed reviews. Chemical fertilizers raise the cost of farming while neo-liberal trade policies have lowered selling prices.
But what about the modern high-tech seeds that were supposed to lead to higher yields and wealth? Companies and researchers call Genetically Engineered (GE) seeds the future of Indian agriculture. But some independent groups place part -- if not most -- of the blame for farmer suicides on these same GE seeds. The Indian government has mostly avoided the question.

Paper Training Your Dog or Puppy

During the time that the puppy is confined in its little den, it will begin to develop the habit of eliminating on paper. After a little time has passed, the puppy will begin to exhibit a preferred place to eliminate. After this preferred spot has been established, the area that is papered should be slowly diminished. The first papers to be removed should be those that are furthest away from the "toilet". Eventually, the owner will have to lay down only a few papers. If the puppy ever misses those papers, it means that the papered area has been reduced too much and too soon.

Refugees leave Bhutan for the US

The refugee situation in Bhutan comes out of tension between the rulers and the southern Bhutanese. Starting in 1990, the government expelled over 80,000 of their residents – namely ethnic Nepalese. The actual number could be more than 100,000. Bhutan’s position is that they were not legal residents and a public safety danger. The refugees say they were discriminated against because they were would oppose the King as the country moves to a constitutional monarchy.
These exiled Bhutanese mostly ended up at one of seven main refugee camps in Nepal. Over 20.000 have taken an offer from the United States to resettle there. Over the next few years, a total of 60,000 are expected. They are grateful for the opportunity to go to school, work, and become citizens of a new country. In return, they hope to contribute positively to American society.
Thanks to Meg Dhimal for telling septic radio about his experiences in Bhutan and Nepal, Barbara Clarihew for arranging this discussion, and Peter Newbegin for sharing his years of experience working with these refugees. Israel, Palestine and the Wall

West Bank Checkpoint Image: Chris Yunker
This episode of Listen In starts with a history of the creation of Israel and the conflicts that led to the wall.
Mohammad Ethman is a human rights activist in Palestine and working for peace in his country with the organization Stop The Wall. He sees Israel’s security wall as a major barrier because it was built across Palestinian land, keeping people from living their basic daily life. He sees it as a physical and symbolic barrier to the peace process as well. So to him and other locals it deserved the name "Apartheid Wall." Residents have objected not only to the fact that the wall keeps them from living their daily lives but also that it was built on Palestinian land beyond the actual geographic demarcations that separate Israel and Palestine. It has become a de-facto annexation of land by Israel.
His outspoken opposition to the wall even got him arrested by Israel. Amnesty International took up his case. Their position is that a person should not be arrested for just stating their opinion, even if the government in power disagrees with it. He was eventually released and returned to public life with a new dedication to promoting peace in the Middle East and prosperity for his people. In his vision of the future, he sees a One State Solution for Israel and Palestine where all residents have an equal voice. He thinks foreign governments -- particularly the United States -- are a major factor in the region's success; he asks Americans to boycott the Israeli settlements which will put pressure on Israel to concede this land.

West Bank barrier, as of 2006 Image: Ynhockey
The United States promotes their "road map" as their guidelines for peace in the Middle East. President Obama reinforced his dedication to this plan in his May 17 2009 public discussion with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He opposed human rights violations on both sides, pointed out that the settlements are a major problem to the process, raised the problem of the isolation of Gaza, and condemned attacks on Israeli civilians. He did not talk about the wall directly. He officially supports the Two State Solution as the ultimate goal of the Middle East peace process.

Natural Gas: Not All It's Fracked Up To Be -- Hydraulic Fracturing
When Jeff Andrysick and his wife Jody found out that the gas company was going to drill near their farm, they dropped everything to find out more. Then they bought a video camera and made a movie that would tell everyone in their area what they learned.
The gas company planned to drill horizontally into the ground and fracture the shale to release natural gas. This hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) technique would harm their farm’s water supply, the air quality and even the peace and quiet of their small town. People in Pennsylvania whose land was similarly fractured reported heavy trucks and machinery constantly running through their towns and dangerous chemicals suddenly appearing in the water supply, sometimes making it undrinkable. The gas company had never warned them of any of this. In fact, they won’t even release the names of the chemicals that they use, making it impossible to defend against them.
Jeff and Jody Andrysick hope that the film shows people another side of the natural gas story than what the companies are telling. They are trying to keep what happened in Pennsylvania out of New York. In the process, maybe these accidental filmmakers will learn what chemicals are planned for their gas wells or hopefully find a way to pay for their journey into cinema. You can hear more about their experience and see the film viewing schedule at http://allfrackedup.com

Natural Gas: Drilling In My Frack Yard

When Jeff Andrysick and his wife Jody found out that the gas company was going to drill near their farm, they dropped everything to find out more. Then they bought a video camera and made a movie that would tell everyone in their area what they learned. You can hear about them and their film in a previous episode of Listen In or by visiting allfrackedup.com.
Another farmer, Carl Arnold, was concerned when he heard about the gas companies’ plans. He went out of his way to talk to many people who had either worked on the process of hydraulic fracturing or live in the areas where it is being done. He learned so much along the way that he could only tell us a small amount in the time we had. His story covers the history of the new horizontal gas wells, the experience of people who live near them and the legislation and regulations that have come along the way.
For their part, the gas companies have taken a lot of time and energy to tell the public about how these new wells can be a positive part of rural New York life and a victory for American energy independence, but Mr. Arnold wants to remind his neighbors of their track record in other parts of the world where they have resorted to violence to extract valuable petroleum while damaging the natural ecosystem, destroying whole communities who have stood in their way.

Sheikh Farid (or Farīduddīn Mas'ūd) was a Sufi poet from Punjabi. His writings were so popular in the region that they became an important part of the Sikh religion, which developed there later. Today, please think about this mythical conversation from the Sikh Guru Nanak to Baba Farid. Notice that reflecting his master's words enhances both the student and the teacher. Meditate and learn from two great wise men in one passage.
Farid:
Separated from God, my body burns like an oven,
My bones burn like firewood.
To meet the Beloved I would walk until my feet were tired,
Then I would walk on my head.
[ Guru Nanak comments:] You need not burn yourself like an oven,
need not inflame your bones.
Why torture your poor limbs?
Behold the spirit in yourself.
Nanak says, I search for my Friend, but my Friend is already with me.

Meditation -- 12

Who is man? Man is the reflection of the Infinite Light.
What is the world? The world is wave on the Infinite Sea.
How could the reflection be separated from its Light? How could the wave be separated from its Sea?
Remember this – when you see the reflection and wave
you are gazing on the Supreme Light and Sea.
-Jami, Diwan
Nur ad-Din Abd ar-Rahman (known commonly as ‘Jami’ after his birthplace) lived in the area of Afghanistan during the 15th century. He was a poet, mathematician and historian, but is most well known for his Sufi spiritual teachings. He viewed Mohamed as an essential part of one’s spiritual development. His poetry is considered some of the last great Sufi (and in general, clasical Persian) works and still well respected today for its wisdom and humility. I think today’s quote shows us both of these qualities.

World Music: A New Look

In the United States, we talk about -World Music- but does the phrase have the same meaning in other countries? We can be guilty of putting all African music into one category, but a World Music radio program in South Africa teaches us about the variety that is possible. Kechil Kirkham tells us how she fell into her radio show and ended up exploring the diversity of African music… then started a whole new show that went in the direction of science. We should all try to learn a lesson from her flexibility.
It has been said that America exports its music around the world. But one band in Croatia wants to export it back. And they want to improve on it in the process. Gruhak comes from a small Croatian town, but figuratively traveled to United Kingdom and United States – plus backwards about 30 years – to find their calling. They specialize in covering classic rock musicians that still find fans today. They also take their interest one step further and try to recreate that unique sound for a whole new generation. Right now, they play for Eastern European crowds to high praise from audiences and critics. But at the rate they are going, they will soon be teaching their masters – the British and the Americans – about their own musical heritage. Watch for them.

Meditation -- 13

What good is it to have a high social class and status? Truthfulness is measured within.
Your high-class pride is like poison. You can hold it in your hand and admire it,
But if you eat it, you will die.
You know your Guru’s has had Power for all time.
Welcome his Commands and you will be welcomed into his home…
Remember, you have come to this world only because of his command.
His Word is spoken to you as loud as if pounded by a drummer.
- Sri Guru Granth Sahib (Page 142, Line 15)
The Sri Guru Granth Sahib is a collection of devotional hymns and poetry stressing long term peace through internal meditation and shows the reader a meaning of True God as morality, honesty and peace within your mind and not as a physical human form. Sri Guru Granth Sahib is the highest regarded scripture in the Sikh religion. It not only contains the works of its own founders but also writings of philosophers from other faiths who inspired these leaders. It is respected and revered by followers of other religious groups such as the Sindhis, Balmikis and Meenas. Sikhs consider it a universal collection and all faiths are welcome to join the audience as it is read aloud within the Gurdwaras.

Sing For Tibet
Lobsang Wangyal uses his position as an independent photojournalist to help educate the world about the reality of Tibet. In addition to his writings and images, Wangyal also works on artistic and cultural events within the Tibetan community. Art projects help connect the people with their culture and even demonstrate their quest for freedom. According to Wangyal, "Tibetan artists through their art form show that... they want to go back to their own country, which is now occupied by China…. They display all this through their media."
Now he is planning a new event called "Sing For Tibet" to keep the issue high in the public view. This is an international performance, to be held on October 10, 2010 in Brussels and New York. There are no celebrities or speeches planned – the audience will perform the "Sing For Tibet" song together, without any kind of amplification. Wangyal hopes that people in Europe and the United States who say they care about the Tibet will take this chance to come out and show the world how much they want freedom for the Tibetan people.

Meditation -- 14

The holy man Vishoba Khechar came to Namdev in disguise.
Namdev told him to face the stone idol when praying.
So Khechar asked, point me in the direction where God does not exist.
If Gods made of stone will never speak.
How will they advise you on your problems?
People think that stone idols are God,
but the truly divine must be truly separate from our physical world.
If a stone god could really satisfy your needs,
then any fool could easily get relief from all the world’s sorrow and pain.
Those who worship gods of stone are truly fools.
Namdev was truly blessed to learn from the great Vishoba Khechar
that God was in his own heart.
--Sakhi of Bhagat Namdev
Although he is not very well known to Westerners, Namdev’s Hindu poetry has inspired Indians in general -- and Punjabi people in particular -- for the past 700 years. He was respected for his total devotion to the deity Lord Vithoba. His Lord came to him, suggesting that he take Visoba Khechar as his teacher and guru. Going eagerly to him, he was dismayed to find the great Vishoba reclining on the Vithoba icon. But in the end, Namdev learned the lesson of his guru’s action and focused his life on meditation and inner peace. Try to imagine his transformation as you follow your own path to inner peace.

Meditation -- 15

A thief pretended to be a holy man so he would not be accused of his crime.
Namdev saw the truth and spoke these words to him:
The snake can shed its skin, but not its poison:
Since your heart is not pure,
Why should you bother with your fake meditation?
You are only a crane watching for fish in the water.
But he who snatches food from the mouth of a lion
Is truly the king of thieves.
You have no chance in this debate.
Those who show the world two faces
Should drink from the infinitely deep cup of the true higher power

Stop Dog Pulling on Leash

Pulling on the leash is another problem trait that many puppies pick up. Unfortunately, this behavior is also one that is sometimes encouraged by well meaning owners. Playing games like tug of war with the leash, or even with a rope (that can look like the leash to the dog) can unwittingly encourage a problem behavior.
The use of a quality body harness can be a big help when training a puppy not to pull, or retraining a dog that has picked up the habit of pulling on the leash. Try training the puppy to accept the body harness the same way it accepts the regular buckle collar...

Do you want to know what knowledge really is?

Training Your New Puppy

On this episode of dog training, puppy training is very important, whether you are training your first puppy or your 20th. Properly training and socializing a puppy is vital to making it a valued member of your family and your community.
In some ways training a puppy is easier than training an adult or adolescent dog. One reason is that the puppy is essentially a “blank slate”, untroubled by past training techniques and other issues. In other ways, however, the puppy can be more difficult to train than an older dog.
One challenge to training a new puppy is that puppies are more easily distractible than adolescent and adult dogs. Everything is new to a puppy, and every new experience provides a new chance for distraction. For this reason, it is best to keep training sessions short when working with a puppy, and to end each training sessions on a positive note......

The California electricity crisis
Enron : Before passage of the deregulation law, there had been only one Stage 3 rolling blackout declared. Following passage, California had a total of 38 blackouts defined as Stage 3 rolling blackouts, until federal regulators intervened in June 2001. These blackouts occurred mainly as a result of a poorly designed market system that was manipulated by traders and marketers. Enron traders were revealed as intentionally encouraging the removal of power from the market during California's energy crisis by encouraging suppliers to shut down plants to perform unnecessary maintenance, as documented in recordings made at the time.

Power Of Utah

During a visit to the Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah I asked people for stories about their experiences with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Surprisingly, the Mormons (as they are also known) was the only religious group I had met where the representatives and even leaders refused to discuss their church. After I left the area, I got some answers from ex-Mormons. The answers were not always clear and sometimes conflicted, but the collection of stories was well worth sharing.
Most people have heard about the Mormons because of their missionary work and because of their large donations that carried California’s Proposition 8 to success. These stories talk about these topics but also tell us a lot about the organization and structure that makes their techniques and positions more clear.
They talked about the large set of beliefs that range from extremely practical to extremely mystic. They also told us that the Mormon church gives an impressive level of services to its members when they are in need. Even ex-members who question the religion’s beliefs value the sense of Mormon community that you won’t find in too many areas of society.
I hope you listen in to hear what these people have to say. As one of them said, it is more than a religion – it is a lifestyle. As a community, they have formed complex structures to maintain an organization that serves its members, travels the world, and has become a significant and powerful business whose influence i s being felt outside the borders of Utah.

Dog Training With a Head Collar

On this episode of dog training, using a head collar has become an increasingly popular dog training tool in the past couple of years. Two of the most well known brands of head collar on the market are the Gentle Leader and the Halti, but there are many other brands that incorporate the basic head collar concept.
Many people find the Gentle Leader easier to fit that the Halti, and in addition the Gentle Leader is designed to fasten around the dog’s neck. The advantage of this design is that even if the dog is somehow able to wriggle out of the muzzle, it is still wearing a collar. This safety feature is very important, especially during training outside or in novel situations. On the other hand, the Halti offers better control of the dog, and for this reason it is often favored when working with very aggressive dogs.
Training a dog with a head collar has a number of advantages over training with a traditional or training collar. For one thing, head collars are often easier to use for beginning dog trainers than are training collars. Head collars are also quite effective at preventing dogs from pulling, or controlling and retraining dogs that tend to pull...

Mormon Power

Last time, we heard about the largest power in Salt Lake City, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or Mormons. This week we will hear more from these ex-members including a little more about their political power and strategies. They start training their members as early as age 3 to think and behave in the Mormon way while discouraging too much independent thinking.
We will also hear about another area where the church has made a large impact: People around the world often know about the church when there is a natural disaster. Mormons have become a standard presence when people have been harmed by the forces of nature and need money, food, clothing or housing. They use their structure and organization to quickly organize large relief efforts whenever and wherever they are needed.
And please listen all the way to the end to hear a lighter view of Mormon history with a reading of Mark Twain’s essay which gives us a nineteenth century view on the “new” religion.

Overcoming Fear

Dr Tyler Woods talks about something that we all have, that we all experience and that we live in constantly, and that is fear.
Join Tyler Woods as she talks about what are some of the root causes of fear, who we create fear and finally how can dissipate fear and how we can conquer fear. She uses simple tips and believes that fear can put you in the drivers set if you make that choice.
Fear is an emotional response to a perceived threat. It is a basic survival mechanism occurring in response to a specific stimulus, such as pain or the threat of danger. Some psychologists such as John B. Watson, Robert Plutchik, and Paul Ekman have suggested that fear belongs to a small set of basic or innate emotions. This set also includes such emotions as joy, sadness, and anger.

Teaching a dog to accept his collar and leash

On this episode of dog training, Learning to walk on a collar and leash is the basis of all further training for every puppy. Until the puppy has learned to accept the collar and leash, it will be impossible to perform any additional training.
The first step toward getting the puppy to accept the collar and leash is to find a collar that fits the dog properly. It is important that the collar be neither too light or too heavy, neither too thin nor too thick. A collar that is too light for the dog can be easily broken, while a collar that is too heavy may be uncomfortable for the puppy to wear. It is also important that the width of the color be appropriate for the size of the dog.

Meditaion 18 Buddha

Wherever there is light, there is shadow; wherever there is length, there is shortness; wherever there is white, there is black. Just like these, as the self-nature of things can not exist alone, they are called non-substantial.

When you speak, do you find it easy to take the extreme position? We like to imagine that it makes our opinions stronger to deny the opposite view. Consider diversity of thought as you listen to the Buddha’s words. Accepting differing opinions can make yours stronger as long as you let them help you but not confuse you.

Meditaion 19 Buddha

Good men and bad men differ radically. Bad men never appreciate kindness shown them, but wise men appreciate and are grateful. Wise men try to express their appreciation and gratitude by some return of kindness, not only to their benefactor, but to everyone else.
--Buddha
The Buddha understood true nature of wisdom and also the nature of evil. Seeing the results of both, he chose to teach wisdom. We all say that wisdom is the better way, so take a moment to listen to his words and think why we value wisdom.

Capitalism Debate Pro and Con

No matter where I travel in the world, everyone debates the benefits of disadvantages of their own style of government and their economic system. In the United States there has been some debate recently over their Capitalistic system because of the bank bailouts where the government gave large amounts of money to private corporations that could no longer stay competitive.
Was the government wrong to help badly run banks stay in business? or did they prove that banks should not be run as strictly free market enterprises? We have already heard the opinions of political leaders and bank executives, but today we will get some answers from the people who work within the Free Market system.
Chet and Luke are two computer programmers who give us their views on the economic system in general and how they feel about it personally. Listen in as we discuss Capitalism, pro and con.

Meditation 20 Guru Nanak

Two neighbors left their houses at the same time and walked together. One went to serve his Guru. The other went to his mistress while his wife stayed at home. As they walked, they talked about which one was spending his time in a better way. They decided to let fate choose for them. Each one continued on his way.
They compared stories the next day. The unfaithful man had found a pot filled with pieces of coal on his walk. Among the coal was a solid gold coin. The disciple did not find any treasure on his own walk. Instead, he stepped on a thorn. They both confronted the Guru and asked him to explain the results and decide whose choice was better.
The Guru said: The first neighbor was a great holy man in his former life and was given a pot of gold coins as a reward. But each time he left his wife to see his mistress, one coin was converted to a piece of coal. By the time he found it, only one coin was left. The second neighbor was a criminal in his former life and condemned to be impaled on a spike. But every time he served his Guru, the spike became a little smaller. By the time he stepped on it, it was only the size of a thorn.
Both men went home to think about this message.

The Puratan Janam Sakhis are a collection of stories that combine history, spiritual lessons, mythology and folk tales. They were written between 300 and 500 years ago and claim to tell miraculous tales from the life of Guru Nanak. Traditionalists say that they must be accepted as truth, even though they contradict each other. They often go against his own teachings that emphasize inner meditation over showy miracles.

meditation 21 Tao Te Ching

The river defines the shape of the valley by flowing under it.
The river is the master of the valley.
To rule people
Speak to them as if they are your master
To lead people
First, follow them.
This way, when the wise leader stands above the people,
They do not feel crushed
And when he stands before the people,
They do not feel blocked
-Tao Te Ching of Lao Tzu
--
Your journey through Chinese theology starts with the honor and discipline of Kung Fu Tzu (Confuscius) but is not complete until you experience the Tao. We don’t know if Lao Tzu started this study, promoted it, or was just a common name for the poets and philosophers who developed this way of thought. Either way, this is the name associated with the Tao Te Ching -- a 2500 year old collection of poems that define the Tao. Although Taoists want the same goal as Confuscians, they suggest a different path. Confuscius promotes rules and order but Lao Tzu analyzes the world and accepts the disorder of nature. You have the advantage of learning both of their ways.

Zarathushtra was not a prophet but wrote truly groundbreaking devotional poetry to his God, Ahura Mazda -- rejecting the many gods of the classical religion at that time. His life and words inspired many people around him and influenced both Islamic and Judeo-Christian thought for thousands of years.

Suicide and a Novel

This week on Living with a Suicide host Dawn Harward interviews Madeleine Herrmann. Madeleine Herrmann lost her husband to suicide and is the auther of Partita a Psychological Mystery.
Madeleine and Fred defied the age-old hostility between the Germans and the French and married. They lived in California, built two houses, and raised four children. Madeleine pioneered physical fitness classes for women and children in California and graduated from UC Berkeley in 1962 with a master’s degree. Tragically, Fred Herrmann committed suicide in 1969. Madeleine raised their four children on her own and then, in 1983, she went back to college to study Transpersonal Psychology in the master’s program at JFK University in Orinda, CA. She has lived in Taos, New Mexico, since 1992.
Partita a Psychological Mystery is a novel exploring the mysteries of human sorrow, love, and music. The story is Madeleine’s fictional exploration of the causes of her husband’s suicide, and presents the view of a woman struggling to find answers for disturbing reality that the man she loved and thought she knew suddenly took his own life. Many readers are moved by the way the tragedy speaks to incomprehensible emotional events in their own lives.

Anxiety Depression and Weight Gain

Today I want to talk about something that so many people tend to have, but there seems to be no name for it. Sometimes we get depressed and with the depression we begin to experience anxiety. Then our self-esteem begins to suffer, we are filled with fear and we begin to over eat or stuff ourselves, we may gain weight so we get depressed, then we have anxiety, then the fear comes in, well it is a cycle, and I call it the despair cycle.
The term despair means loss of hope or hopelessness. It literally means without hope. More deeply, it means without Spirit, without breath, without life. Despair is being without a direction, without alternatives. Not surprisingly, despair is linked to the soul issue of hope.
That is why it is so important to work with spirituality when dealing with all these issues at once because it gives despair some sort of direction.
Mainstream psychiatry and therapies do not see you as suffering from an endless cycle, they just see a set of symptoms and treat them, however, it can be a cycle, and a cycle that needs to be treated correctly.
You know what makes it so difficult about the cycle is that the cycle is difficult to break. Many people have tried to treat each cycle separately. They go to therapist for depression and anxiety then get sent to a psychiatrist to get medications, go somewhere else to help them with weight loss, and go somewhere else to help them find their spirituality and they keep going because they feel each issue is separate. By the time we are done, we are spinning in circles and in many cases, still suffering most of the symptoms.
The problem is you are a whole, you are not depression, you are not anxiety and your are not fear. You are a whole person that needs to be treated as a whole and not just a group of symptoms.
So today I want to talk about the despair cycle and offer you a few ways that you can help yourself.
You know I believe fear gets in our way when we are dealing with the despair cycle. Please know that our biggest challenge is not the fear, but being opened to new information about fear.
99% of fear is not about the now, and it is normally not about the reason you think it is. In fact, most fears are not real. Fear is justified less than 1% of the time you experience it. Amazing isn’t it? Basically, fear is something we create within ourselves, an illusion of the mind. This illusion makes Fear looks and feels real, and We think fear is real because we believe it is real and because we believe it, we feel it. But the truth is…..it is an illusion.
Negative thinking creates fear, which in turn, can create anxiety and depression and low self esteem. Here comes that cycle again, and the truth is, it is based on thoughts.
Thoughts are energized by reacting to them with an emotion. The more thoughts the more emotion, here’s the thing, we have about 60- 70 thousand thoughts a day and if we hold onto that thought for a minute or more we begin manifesting that thought turning it into an emotion and then acting on it. So it would make sense to begin to recognize your thought process as a way to cope with fear. Have a good attitude and a positive outlook. You really become what you thinkWhen faced with something frightening, think of it as a challenge that can be changed into an opportunity.
Now speaking of opportunity this is a great opportunity for me to talk about another part of the despair cycle and that is anxiety. I think the most important thing we can remember here is that Anxiety works on an exaggeration. It works by feeding it a story that is not true. You tell yourself a story that has no facts or evidence and you begin to believe in it based strictly on the story you created.
Anxiety is filled with what if’s, so take the what if’s out of anxiety and you take its very roots away. You can do that by simply staying in the now. I know I know it seems to be the buzz word but staying on the now really helps with anxiety. You see worrying about the future or regretting the past isn’t going stop your anxiety, in fact it’s going to increase your anxiety. Want to know why? It’s because there is nothing you can do about the past and believe me, we cannot make the future happen.
So now let’s take a quick peek, we disassemble fear by recognizing our thoughts and use them to create new opportunity and we help deal with anxiety by sticking to the now and listening to only the facts. See how simple this all seems?
Notice I said it seems. Look its taken you a long time to construct the despair cycle it will take you a while to deconstruct it but I think its great to have a few simple tools to work through some of the basics.
So let’s talk about depression for a second. Did you know that only about 50% of people get help with antidepressants? So what does the other half of people do to cope with depression?
They can use a more natural and holistic approach. Holistic approaches have many modalities, which help treat depression and give the you more responsibility and say in their overall care.
There are so many natural treatments. Of course there are great supplements that are out there that can really help balance your neurotransmitters and give you over all good health. In fact some of the supplements have been compared to some of the antidepressant on the market only with little to no side effects. This is a proven path many are taking.
Movement is important for treating depression and in fact the despair cycle in general. Movement such as Yoga can be very helpful.I cannot begin to tell you how many of my clients have found that yoga has been a true cure for their depression. Some people say that regular exercise becomes intolerable when depressed but Yoga exercise, starting with as few a poses a day in just a few minutes can become one of the best natural medicines the body can produce.
Tai Chi is another way you can help yourself. You see it goes back to movement. It is Chinese practice and effective for people suffering from depression or anxiety. The practice involves a series of coordinated movement helping the patient to breathe and meditate at the same time. Tai Chi can be practiced by anyone.
Simple walks can even make a huge difference in your depression. Have you ever looked at a pool of water and it has not been moved by rain or ore water, it gets stagnant, yecky stuff grows in it, and it becomes harmful. Well we are made of water and we are much like the pond of water and we need to have movement so our mind our body and our spirit does not become stagnate.
Meditation can help as well in fact A new study in the Archives of General Psychiatry shows that for people suffering from depression meditation worked a great deal. Breathing and being calm naturally can calm the mind,
So when was the last time you went to your doctor or psychiatrist and they suggested the use of yoga, meditation, spirituality, supplements, diet and exercise to treat your anxiety and depression or to use it to build self esteem, and here’s the kicker, to use these modalities to lose weight? Not many professionals will suggest this. Even though there are a variety of studies backing up the facts that a natural approach to health and wellness especially depression and anxiety, fear and self esteem and even weight loss can battled through natural proven treatments.
Battling the despair cycle is not easy and rarely will you hear someone give you a prescription for life. Despair is a mental state which exaggerates not only our misery but also our weakness. With that in mind I can tell you that you are quite capable of and breaking free of this cycle and walking straight forward.
I think it is key to remember that we are a whole, we are mind body and spirit and combined we are a whole, we are not separate parts. That is why a holistic approach to mental health and breaking the cycle of despair is so important.
That’s because once again let me emphasize holistic healing addresses all parts of the individual furthermore holistic healing is not intended to serve as a band-aid or a one time fix. It is an ongoing journey of discovery in search of more answers and ultimately; living better, being healthier, and striving for wholeness.
That is where your spirituality would come in to play. Having a strong spiritual base helps ease depression, helps us heal physical illness, puts a lid on anxiety, makes us fearless when we are frightened, boosts our self-esteem and makes us conscious people. The spiritual path is one of inner self discovery. Its total focus is based upon ones personal process of self discovery and the search for greater meaning. The only requirement for spirituality is a willingness to commit oneself to total self honesty and personal responsibility.
Spirituality is only for those who recognize that life brings to them that which they create through their thoughts and actions, and that they are totally responsible for their own life experience. Most modern day spiritualists will tell you that spirituality has to do with living with deliberation, that is, living consciously and intentionally—not just "going through the motions" of life, but engaging in life with consciousness.
I personally believe if we combine positive thought with positive movement and positive outlook, we can conquer the despair cycle and live a life knowing that there is the opportunity for insight, joy, faith, and the capability to live life as fully as possible.

Self Love

Hi this is Dr Tyler Woods with holistic health and healing and your mental health tip of the week. One of the best tools we have in combating mental health issues is self love. It’s hard to feel good about yourself when you don’t like you and for some one of the most terrifying thing is to accept oneself completely and that is what self love is. It is loving and accepting you. It is giving you the same respect you give others. You must love yourself before you love another. By accepting yourself and fully being what you are, your simple presence can make others happy. You deserve love, most of all from yourself! So don’t feel selfish or guilty if you take care of yourself. Putting someone else’s needs in front of your own is not self love, nor is not taking care of yourself. The perfect way to express love to yourself is to take total care of yourself. Eat well, do not set your needs aside, don’t react in fear and Give yourself the true gift of life: make a commitment to listen to your body, heart and spirit and vow never to ignore them! Don’t just catch yourself being wrong…catch yourself being right, this is Dr Tyler Woods saying walk in peace…

Meditation 24 Nietzsche

"You used to feel passion and called it evil. But now you have only your virtues left: they grew out of your passions. In the end all your passions became virtues; your devils became angels.
Now, nothing evil will come from you any more, unless it is the evil that comes out of the fight between your virtues. Oh my brother, if you are lucky enough to have only one virtue and no more, you will pass over the bridge more easily"
Today's meditation is motivated by the words of German writer Friedrich Nietzsche written in his late 1800's novel "Thus Spoke Zarathustra." Nietzsche is commonly connected with Nihilism, but please take some time to think about his book again. He uses the real Persian philosopher Zarathustra as his main character to discourage conventional traditions. Was his only message to criticize the lack of substance behind society’s customs as pointless? Or was he also encouraging you to experience the reality of the physical world as an unconventional but more effective path to true morality?

Meditation 25 Siddhartha

"All of your thoughts and words tell only half the truth. The Buddha had to divide the universe into Samsara and Nirvana, but only to teach the world about them. Nobody is enitrely Samsara or enitrely Nirvana; and neither is anyone enitrely a saint or a sinner. The universe has more than one side. It only seems to because we believe that time is something real."
Wise words are true whether they come from the east or the west. Ancient wisdom and modern wisdom tell the same truth. Today I share words adapted from Herman Hesse’s 1622 novel "Siddhartha" which tells the story of the Buddha. Hesse was a Christian, but his family spent much time in India -- he was deeply inspired by the Buddhist prayers his father translated into German. In the novel, the Buddha looks at time through the point of view of the river. Nothing in a river stays the same for more than a fraction of a second, but we still consider it to be one constant, real thing. Too often, we search for a guide to take up through the river. Today, let the river be your guide.

Food and Mood

Everything we eat affects our moods. More and more mental health professionals agree that diet and depression go hand-in-hand, confirming that healthy foods help relieve depression. Brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) such as dopamine, and serotonin, appear to be influenced by the foods we eat. Did you know a turkey sandwich can calm you down? Feeling stressed? Then have tuna salad in an avocado followed by a cup of frozen sorbet. People who experience mild-to-moderate depression are often deficient in folic acid, and eating foods that contain this include; turkey, asparagus, beets, spinach, peas, avocados, brussels sprouts, bok choy, cabbage, broccoli, savoy, beans, chick-peas, soybeans, lentil, and oranges. Omega fatty three is not only helping depression for some people it is curing it and certain foods such as More doctors and nutritionists are suggesting people include foods such as salmon, trout, grilled albacore tuna, halibut, sardines, cod, tofu, flaxseed, pumpkin seed, soybeans, and walnuts can help. Selecting foods that promote good neurotransmitter health is just one more way to reduce symptoms of depression. This is dr tyler woods saying walk in peace

This sentence works best and be more annoying if you can make your voice as whiny as possible. "Why haven't you called me on the phone? I thought you loved me?" This will make him feel guilty and make him tell you he does love you. Two for the price of one.

Gratitude

Hi this is Dr Tyler Woods with holistic health and healing and your mental health tip of the week. People who are not thankful have a difficult time in life with coping. They are often angry, depressed, and suffer a host of physical and mental health issues. In order to keep your mental and physical health in tip top form, adopt an attitude of gratitude. You can have an attitude of gratitude by doing a few simple things such as Say thank you as much as you can and mean it. Just say thank you to people places and things and see how you feel. Helping others is a great way to show gratitude. Treat everyone with respect. Even if you do not agree with someone it does not mean you treat them with disrespect. Whether they are 15 or 90, a person should be treated with respect. Be positive. Stop complaining so much. It is hard to be powerful and pitiful at the same time Finally try to look for the good. Everything has two sides and when we seek the bad, then that is what we get, but when we look for the good, I can guarantee you will find good.

Meditation 26 karma

"He who is afraid to harm anything, even the wind, truly appreciates pain felt by all living things. He who knows what is bad for himself knows what is bad for others. He who knows what is bad for others knows what is bad for himself. Keep this in mind -- that anything you do for others you also do for yourself. When you understand why it is wrong to harm the wind then you become the wise one who truly understands karma." -Acaranga Sutra
So many people search far for a spiritual guide but the teacher has been there the whole time. The Acaranga Sutra has guided the Jain people of India for well over 2,000 years. If you read its text, you will find that it is a series of lessons on proper behavior in your life. Through the words of this holy book, Lord Mahavira guides you through different definitions of right and wrong, urges humility and emphasizes the importance and benefits of non-violence to all living things.

The Fall Of The United States and The Chamber

The Reverend interviews Chet Gardiner about the activities of the Chamber of Commerce and the threat they pose to the United States of America. They discuss the allegations of planting false documents, domestic spying and targeting the children and families of political opponents.
Dear Lord, Please, bring your sword to defeat those that hide in their chamber with Satan and worshiping commerce to destroy the people, the working families of America. Lord, send the Holy Spirit into their hearts so they can see their evil ways and break the chains of Satan that holds them there. In the name of Jesus Christ, our savour, we pray. Amen.

Laughter Is The Best Medicine

Laughter is the best medicine
Hi this is Dr Tyler Woods with holistic health and healing and your mental health tip of the week. Plato’s remark that "Even the Gods love jokes." People underestimate the power of laughter. The physical effects of laughter on the body include increased breathing, increased oxygen use, short-term changes in hormones and certain neurotransmitters, and increased heart rate. Laughter can be a powerful antidote to depression and anxiety – without a prescription and without side effects. Laughter relieves tension, improves our sense of well-being, serves as an outlet for anger and provides a healthy escape from reality. Keep in mind humor isn’t about merely telling jokes; it’s the way we view the world. We can be sincere about life without taking it so seriously. We can laugh about our mistakes and pain. So lighten up! You need to laugh more. Look for the humor in your everyday problems. You can worry yourself sick, or laugh till it stops hurting. This is Dr Tyler Woods saying laugh in peace…

Meditation Tibetan Book of Living and Dying

"It is too often that people come to meditation hoping to see miraculous results like visions, lights, or something supernatural. When this does not occur, they are disappointed. But the real miracle of meditation is more ordinary -- it is most useful in easing your mind." -Sogyal Rinpoche
In your voyage through Eastern spiritual wisdom, you must have discovered the landmark text The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. This book was the product of one of Buddhism great visionaries, Sogyal Rinpoche. He thoroughly studied Tibetan Buddhism in all its forms, but also carefully studied other religions and even non-religion. I suggest you look at his work as the product of someone who sincerely searched for meaning and relevance to all people in the modern world. You will find his message touches the common interests of everyone including your own.

Meditation 28 Sogyal Rinpoche

"All people are fragmented into many different aspects. We don't know who we really are. What is our true identity? What do we believe in? So many contradictory voices and feelings fight for control inside us that we find ourselves scattered everywhere, in all directions, leaving nobody at home."
Can you hope to reach the same level of understanding as Sogyal Rinpoche? He mastered all forms of Tibetan Buddhism before producing 'The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying', one of the most respected works of its kind. With his knowledge, he could have gone over all of our heads. But he chose to use his skill to simplify teachings, not complicate them. The true genius reaches for depth, not height.

Meditation 29 Consciousness

“The secret to wisdom is Dhiyan, or consciousness. Also you can call it concentration or mindful thought. To reach dhiyan, first go to a quiet place where you are alone. Your old habits will not change so fast that you can concentrate in the wrong environment. There are different kinds of dhiyan. Ignorant dhiyan is the one done by people who are copying the masters but don’t understand why. They see suffering and know they are impure but are afraid to let go of their ego. So instead of trying to reach consciousness, they try to stop all thought. Their minds are vacant.”
-- Lankavatara Sutra (Chapter 7)
The Lankavatara Sutra (literally, “The Lanka Castle Teaching”) is an important Buddhist writing. The exact origin of this sutra is unknown, but its setting is definitely Lanka, the closest major island south of India (today it is called Sri Lanka). As you probably already have read, Indian myth calls Lanka the home of the god Ravan . This sutra teaches valuable lessons in the form of a series of questions asked by the Bodhisattva Mahmati and the answers from Buddha.
This format reinforced the theme that if you want to find enlightenment, a master must guide your path. The South Indian monk Bodhidarma made this an important part of the Ch’an branch of Buddhism that he started in China. The word Ch’an is a Chinese approximation of the Sanskrit word Dhiyan -- the other major theme of the Lankavatara Sutra. I ask that you combine these themes yourself. Listen to the master’s words as he guides your path to Dhiyan.

Economic Justice The Second Bill of Rights

As our country, the blessed United States Of America, succumbs to the will of the elite. Once again we are redistributing wealth to the privileged and wealthy. The good Reverend Joseph does his best to have President Roosevelt as a Guest. The Reverend looks at the Second Bill Of Rights that President Roosevelt proposed and where we are today.
The Reverend reflects on how Nafta, the WTO, and 401Ks work to undermine America and how the second bills of rights not only address these issues but should be a source of inspiration for all people. Please join Reverend Joseph for prayer and thought.
The Second Bill of Rights was a list of rights proposed by Franklin D. Roosevelt, the then President of the United States, during his State of the Union Address on January 11, 1944. In his address Roosevelt suggested that the nation had come to recognize, and should now implement, a second "bill of rights". Roosevelt's argument was that the "political rights" guaranteed by the constitution and the Bill of Rights had "proved inadequate to assure us equality in the pursuit of happiness." Roosevelt's remedy was to declare an "economic bill of rights" which would guarantee:
* Employment, with a living wage,
* Freedom from unfair competition and monopolies,
* Housing,
* Medical care,
* Education, and,
* Social security

Meditation 30 Self-Realization

“To be a Bodhisattva you must want inner self-realization of wisdom, not mere words. First, understand that all things are products of your mind. Second, forget about birth and death. Third, you must lose all ego. Fourth, truly understand self-realization. Self-realization is identity. Oneness. Before you can enter this state you can’t have any assumptions about it. You cannot be attached to any thing, not even ideas. Not even self.
-- Lankavatara Sutra (Chapter 7)
The Lankavatara Sutra represents Buddha’s teachings being accepted by Ravan, the god of the South Indian island of Lanka. As you read, your attention will be caught through a fantastic mythic tale in which Buddha has magical powers. Then your conscious mind will be challenged as you try to understand a detailed practical guide to focused meditation.
Its main goal is to define consciousness as the ultimate reality. When the monk Bodhidharma carried the Lankavatara Sutra to China, this aspect became very popular. Later, Japanese monks would make it the basis for Zen Buddhism as you know it today. Please take time to stop and think about Buddha’s message here as it relates to your own study of the Zen.

Introduction to Protest Songs in Left Wing Politics

"If I can't dance, I don't want to be part of your revolution." This paraphrase of famous Anarchist, Author Emma Goldman's retort when accused of "hurting the cause" by having too much fun effectively sums up the heart of this show.
Over the years, major social and political Movements have been strengthened by music and song. Where would the Civil Rights Movement have been without "We Shall Overcome"? Where would the Anti-Vietnam war Movement have been without "Masters of War" and "Fixin' to Die Rag"? Where would the Labor Movement have been without "Solidarity Forever" or "The Internationale"?
If you haven't been paying attention, the major social and political movements of today are also being supported and enhanced by great political songs.
Within the constraints of overbearing, corporate "copyright" laws, each episode will examine a great left-wing protest/political song. We will trace each song's history, its impact on the time that produced it and its relevance to today.

HB Gary, Bank of America Vs Real Americans

In the first of three parts we will set up background on how the Bank of America documents ended up on the open internet. This way, you can see that the Bank of America document manipulation story is part of a larger right wing network that includes the government and government contractors. The leaked documents not only showed us what the Bank was really doing but also showed us how far the right wing will go protect their interests at the expense of real Americans.
Today we are going to talk about Bank of America, the banking crisis in America and how the Bank was trying to modify public opinion to deal with the negative image that came out of the crisis. Along the way we will talk about how the US government comes in and what companies the Bank was using, directly and indirectly to change the public perception.
Recently, two major news stories came together. First, from the world of business and government, the second from technnology and government. The first story was the subprime mortgage crisis. This story featured several banks including the Bank of America and how they gambled and lost on risky home loans. The US government covered their losses and bonuses were handed out to the executives who carried out this plan...

The Internationale
![]()
If you know this song at all you probably think that “The Internationale” was the “Soviet National Anthem” (if you even remember the “Soviet Union”). Well, this episode will detail the real history of the song and how it's still alive and even more relevant today.
In spite of what the USAmerican propaganda machine would have you believe, The Internationale is NOT the National Anthem of the Soviet Union …
Eugene Potter wrote the original lyrics of The Internationale in June of 1871 to commemorate the Paris Commune, which the French Army had just crushed with great bloodshed.
After French defeat in the Franco-Prussian war and the fall of the French Empire, the workers of Paris had taken over the city and ran it themselves.
The Commune declared its aim as "ending the anarchic and ruinous competition between workers for the profit of the capitalists”, and the "dissemination of socialist ideals"...

Bank of America And Public Deception
![]()
Today we will hear more about the Bank of America and the banking crisis. In the first part of this story, we spent a lot of time on HBGary and HBGary Federal - computer security companies whose website and network were destroyed by internet attacks by some members of the group called Anonymous. They were fighting back when they found out that HBGary was using them to get publicity. In the process, the world found out what else HBGary was doing for their high profile client, the Bank of America.
In the first part of this report, we found out how the bank caused a crisis in the banking system. When the truth came out, they didn't really face any long term penalty from either the government or the public.
Still, the Bank of America was worried about being caught making bad loans so they went further to try and fix their any potential damage to their public image. This is where HBGary finally comes in. When the group Anonymous read their internal emails, they found out that HBGary was doing more than just computer security. They were using their computers to invent false identities on the internet... a large number of false identities whose job it was to loudly and publicly defend the Bank of America. Using their software, one person could write an opinion that would get multiplied and posted around the internet under many different users on a wide variety of websites for public view. The HBGary product was careful enough to make the identities different and realistic sounding. Even the comments were composed to not sound like they came from the same template. They hoped a fake grassroots campaign of support from a large number of seemingly indepenent people would drown out any public outcry against them.
This strategy is based on a phenomenon called "social proof." In short, if one person criticizes the Bank of America but thirty or forty reply to defend the bank, the average person will ignore the facts and instead try to go along with the majority.

Joe Hill: The Preacher and the Slave

Welcome to our 2nd Episode about Joe Hill’s most famous song, The Preacher and the Slave. "The Preacher and the Slave" was written by Joe Hill in 1911. It was written as a parody of the hymn "In the Sweet By and By". In this song, Joe Hill coined the now familiar phrase "pie in the sky."
The Industrial Workers of the World (commonly known as the Wobblies) were founded in 1905. They concentrated much of their energies organizing migrant workers in lumber and construction camps. Joe Hill was an organizer in the IWW and devoted his life to the "awakening of
He wrote his songs to inspire solidarity in the ranks of the IWW and to recruit new members.
He and the Wobblies encouraged a "conscientious withdrawal of efficiency," which was not a call for violence, but rather a sprinkle of sand in the workings of machinery, and, more specifically, the efforts of non-union friendly employers...

Meditation 31 Finding Buddha

“To find a buddha, you have to see your own nature. Whoever sees his own nature is a buddha.
If you don't see your nature, invoking buddha is useless. Reciting sutras, making offerings and keeping precepts are all useless.
Cause and effect is nonsense and Buddhas don't practice nonsense.
As long as you look for a Buddha somewhere else, you'll never see that your own mind is the Buddha."
--Bodhidharma (Ch’an master)
No matter where you live in the world, you have heard about Zen Buddhism, but most people don’t know it was derived from Chinese Ch’an Buddhism of the 6th century AD. The Chinese version, in turn, came from India. In fact, the words “Zen” and “Ch'an” are both corruptions of the Sanskrit Dhiyan, meaning “focus” or “concentration.”
The first Chinese Ch'an master, Bodhidharma, arrived from South India with the major Buddhist teaching of his homeland -- the Lankavatara Sutra. He became the first of a series of leaders who each taught its basic message of consciousness through self-realization. Bodhidharma also stressed the master - disciple relationship as the path to enlightenment, which kept the movement under strict control. However, after about a hundred years the religion eventually weakened and Taoist influences started to mingle in.
Ironically, this process let survive the religious persecution of the 9th century while most forms of Buddhism died out. In fact, it became the dominant Chinese philosophy. We are lucky to be able to listen to the words of the master himself. You can learn much from his message; it is simple and direct but inspired an entire nation.

Obesity, Healthcare Costs and Executive Salaries
This part one of a three part series on health care in America. One of the most biggest concerns in the US today is Health Care. The government has been discussing and debating it for years. Health Insurance companies fill up television time with their own views. The average person can hardly get in their opinion. This is Ben Jenkins. In the next few episodes, we will talk about some of the real issues involved, that you don’t always hear about on the news or on television. We will even hear from a nurse who treats patients and would like to see them get better care. But we will also hear about the people fighting against health care for Americans and why the Right wing is fighting to keep you from getting the care you deserve.
For many Americans, the major health problem today is obesity. Just look at television or even Internet ads. Almost any form of media is dominated with diet aids, stomach slimming exercises and weight loss secrets. The industry in the US alone was recently estimated at 25 billion dollars a year. But even with such an obviously major health problem that decreases lifespan and lowers productivity nationwide, Health Insurance companies try to dispute the value of fighting obesity.
Health Insurance companies are administrative, not medical. And some studies estimate that almost one third of total health care cost goes to administration. This is twice as high as countries that have national health care systems. So the companies have a large financial interest in keeping a system that is heavily weighted to the administrators. Please listen online or download the show.

Health Care Vs Profits

This is part two of three on health care in America. Health care executives have used advertising and the media to push the view that Health *care* is an all-or-nothing proposal. They take advantage of the fact that most Americans don’t know of any alternatives or how well most alternatives work every day in every other industrialized nation on Earth. Overall, nationalized systems are much more efficient and lower the cost of health care to the patients and also the country. But lower costs completely opposes the goals of Health Administrators, who trying to protect their high salaries by *raising* costs.

Meditation 32 Zen Buddhism

"Toyo was a young child who stayed at Kennin temple. He saw the master Mokurai ask koans of the disciples and wanted one also. Mokurai said he was too young. Toyo insisted, so finally Mokurai said to him
'I know the sound of two hands clapping. What is the sound of one hand clapping?'
Toyo listened to his hand for the rest of the day..."
--Shaseki-shu (Collection of Stone and Sand), written late in the thirteenth century by the Japanese Zen teacher Muju (the "non-dweller")
By the 12th century, the Japanese had revived the Chinese Ch'an Buddhism under the name Zen. It teaches its lessons through the Koan, basically an extension of the master-disciple dialog. You know them commonly as puzzling stories often with no clear meaning or possible solution. But koans were originally told as simple riddles and more emphasis was on the discussion the student had with his master as he tried to solve it
Zen Buddhism has expanded and grown greatly in the Western world over the past century, possibly because its principle of focused meditation over ritual and idol worship compares well to modern Christian ideals. I hope you will think about more than this one story by the great master Muju. Think about the purpose and structure of the koan. I hope it can it help you focus your mind.

Health Care In USA: Rep Eliot Engel vs The Right Wing

This is part three of three on health care in America - We have seen some of the real dangers that the right wing has promoted when they protect high cost health insurance that keeps corporate profits high. Health company executives make millions of dollars a year, up to twenty five million for top CEOs so they are willing to fight hard to keep the United States from building a national health care system that lowers costs to you.

HCG Good or Fad Diet? Diet Reviews

Dr Woods talks about what a fad diet is, covers a few of the big fad diets currently and then talks about healthy diets and lifestyle. She emphasizes that there are no miracle cures for weight loss and unfortunately there are no short cuts and a person should never try to lose weight fast rather weight loss should require a "back to the basics" approach.
You are what you eat." We all know that a bad diet leads to obesity but did you know it leads to a variety of mental health issues. Low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, A person's food intake affects mood, behavior, and brain function. For people with mental health issues, diet is rarely, if ever, considered an issue in their treatment. It appears we would rather medicate than dedicate our lives to a healthy lifestyle of eating.

Meditation 33 Monk and Master

“A monk came to Sekito and asked how he could be freed.
Instead of answering directly, the master replied 'Who has put you in prison?'
The monk tried to understand but couldn't. He asked again a different way:
'How can I become pure?'
The master did not hesitate to reply.
'Who has made you impure?'
The monk was surprised but tried a third way:
'What is Nirvana?'
The master Sekito simply asked the monk 'Who has trapped you in the cycle of rebirth?'
- Ch'an Master Shi-T'ou (Sekito)
The Ch'an master Chen Hsi-ch'ien (700-790) was known as Shi-T'ou (literally “Stone Head”) because he built his humble hut on a flat rock instead of the ground. His landmark book “Transmission of the Light” features the question-answer format you commonly find in Buddhist wisdom. Here, we will use his Japanese name Sekito to honour his importance to Zen Buddhism -- he is considered one of its two major leaders.
Listen to message that lies beyond his words. Imagine the dialog and the thought that led up to this point. Avoid distractions and think about the message of who is responsible for your peace of mind. Let it stay with you. Become the monk and become the master.

Meditation 34 What is Freedom

What does 'freedom' mean?
Does the eagle feel limited by the sky and want to swim in the sea?
Does the fish not see enough in the river and want to dance on the wind?
The sky is freedom for the bird but death for the fish.
The sea is wide for the fish but will drown the bird.
We ask for freedom but freedom to do what?
We have the whole ocean to swim and the horizon goes into the next life.
But we would rather search for a prison to call freedom.
-Holy Quran
We search for so much in our lives, but never seem to get as much out of it as we put in. Maybe we are looking in the wrong places for the wrong things. There is so much that is right within our reach -- often right in front of us. But we skip that, looking for harder goals instead.
Wise prophets have come before you and can predict your thoughts. You want to conquer the world. Mohammed reveals the message from Allah that we have all the tools right in front of us to find true freedom. You may not be satisfied, but know that living on the true path in the material world guides your spirit to great heights.

Suicide Roundtable

This episode on Living with a Suicide we have a round table discussion. Josette and Madeleine are best friends. They met in the Houston Airport after their plane was grounded because of the crash of an international flight. Madeleine bummed a ride to a local hotel with Josette where they discovered that not only were they both from France, but they lived only a few miles from each other in Northern California. Madeleine was still grieving the loss of her husband to suicide. Little did they know that ten years later Josette would also lose her husband to suicide. Several decades have passed since these two remarkable and strong women were brought together by fate. They have joined Dawn Harward and Tyler Woods, PHD for a conversation about losing a spouse to suicide and how they survived it. This group of women represents several decades of suicide survivorship which makes for an interesting conversation on support services.

Meditation 35 Bad Action

You can repay a bad action with a bad one of your own. But he who pardons a bad action and instead puts it right will get his reward from Allah. You should pardon and overlook evil acts. Wouldn’t you want Allah to forgive your own? Allah is Ever-Forgiving and Most Merciful to those who can control their anger and instead forgive.”
-Holy Quran
Believers and non-believers disagree on morals. Believers want to understand principles refined through more wisdom than any one person could invent in one lifetime. Non-believers feel they build more honest guidelines since they can’t lie to themselves and do not blindly follow a given set of rules.
But isn’t morality really how we are responsible to one another? Muslims believe the messages of the Quran were given to the Prophet Mohammed through divine inspiration and contain the purest guide to life. It considers human nature as well. Even though we first think about revenge when something wrong happens to us, Mohammed reveals that Allah wants you consider the path of forgiveness. You have heard this message before, no matter which spiritual path you follow or even if you follow none at all. The message is the same: If everyone was to forgive errors made against them, this will include others forgiving errors that you have made against them.

The people of the world are fast asleep. If they ever wake up, they would run to the all-knowing Master. They would give everything they have just to hear one word from Him. Someday soon, treacherous voices be raised in many lands. Shun them. Do not follow not the evil-hearted. Open your own heart! Personal Boundaries

Dr Tyler Woods believes that setting boundaries is vital to learning to honor yourself and these imaginary lines help people protect themselves both physically and emotionally. They keep other's actions and behaviors from hurting, distracting, annoying, or imposing on you. Boundaries are limits you set on how others can treat you or behave around you. People treat you as you allow them to; however, you can actually teach others how to treat you based on how strong, or weak your boundaries are.
She reminds people that boundary setting is like any new skill you will need to learn the basics, create a plan for applying your new skill, and then follow through with action and a support system. Over time and with practice, setting boundaries will become easier.

Meditation 37 Bahá’u’lláh

Through his presence, God has abolished the concept of “uncleanness” where some things or people might be called impure. He is Ever-Forgiving and Most Generous. All things were cleaned in the sea of purification on the first day. This is a gift from His kingdom that includes all the worlds. Join forces with the followers of all religions to proclaim the true words of the Highest Power.
- Bahá’u’lláh, Kitáb-i-Aqdas
The Kitáb-i-Aqdas was revealed in its entire form to Bahá’u’lláh in the mid 1800’s. The Baha’i value the wisdom of all sacred texts but consider the .Kitáb-i-Aqdas as the purest message from God and consider it their most holy book.
Bahá’u’lláh is the most recent of the world’s major prophets and so is possibly the most forward thinking as well. He emphasized one common message to all the world’s religions and resisted putting people into castes or sects. Today, you can see that its members come from all races and countries. The many rules inside the Kitáb-i-Aqdas do not try to divide humanity but instead improve it -- combining all paths to reach the same goal. Forget your differences and open your mind to all forms of enlightenment that surround you.

Meditation 38 Pulling Love

Men will work hard to reach their desires. Women go to their husbands and cling to them. They mingle and intertwine, both pouring out and pulling love from each other. This is nature that you see across all Heaven and Earth.
-Rig Veda 1.105.2
You might find it hard to think of Hinduism as a religion. It contains many different beliefs and subdivisions, covering politics, health, and military beyond just spirituality and religion. Hindu philosophy is based on the Vedas, a set of compilations of prayers and poetry.
The oldest and most important of these, Rig Veda, was developed at the decline of the Harrapan civilization (c. 1000 BC) by the new ruling class of the Indus River Valley to summarize the words of the Gods and to comment on daily life. By no coincidence, it also put themselves in the highest position of society. Brahmans used these words to solidify their leadership of India as being ordained by the Gods in developing their caste system.
You can chant the verses of the Rig Veda to your God or you can interpret the hymns as guidelines to life. Its words will tell you about honor and sacrifice, humility and pride, life and death. But it will also talk about the physical world -- animals, food, even sex and drugs. In some cases, you will be surprised how sexual behavior is told in detail. Don’t block out the descriptions of sex acts; I only ask that you interpret them in context of being guidelines to all parts of life.

Achieve The State of Yoga

A person achieves the state of yoga when he has renounced all material desires, he does not take his actions to satisfy the senses, he does not take actions purely for enjoyment. What you call ‘renunciation’ is the same as yoga; you are connecting with the Supreme. No one can become a yogi unless he renounces the desire to first gratify his senses. ||2||
-Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 5)
The Bhagavad Gita is one the most widely accepted guides to the Hindu religion. In it, Krishna teaches us how to live our lives to free ourselves from the suffering of the physical world and escape reincarnation.
It tells us Karam Vairagyay Yoga will help us reach the ultimate goal of living by emphasizing the importance of renunciation. You should not be attached to the pleasurable results of your efforts. Simple sensory pleasures are a short term goal. Free yourself from the birth/death cycle by focusing your attention past the senses.

Meditation 40 Deh Shiva 10th Sikh Guru

O Great Shiva, grant my wish -- that I will never be afraid to do good,
and never be afraid to fight evil.
With your courage I will win.
Put yourself in my mind because I want to praise you
And when my life must end, it will be while fighting bravely.
-- Guru Gobind Singh
This is the most famous poem of the 10th Sikh Guru, but is truly a puzzle. It excites the people of Punjab even though it is written the language of another land. Sikhs sing its verses as holy prayers even though it describes a Hindu epic. It has become a uniting anthem even though it comes a text so controversial that it has deeply divided the community for the past 300 years.
Many of us are surprised to see how much Indian spiritual literature refers to military battles. We expect religion to support peace and criticize fighting. But the great Hindu deities are commonly famed for the fighting skills that protect the innocent. In myth, Rama and Krishna are worshipped for their victories in war. And in Sikh history, Guru Gobind Singh is honored for fighting India’s Mughal oppressors.
Both Hindu and Sikh religions are based on calmness, not violence. So you might interpret violent spiritual writings as a symbolic fight for inner peace. But this approach often ends up with complicated, awkward translations of simple direct words. Take some time to see it from both sides but don’t expect a clear answer; this debate will continue for a long time.

Reform The WTO Fair Trade

After prayer, Reverend Joseph outlines 5 changes to the WTO that would stop the race to the bottom. With these changes the WTO would stop being a tool for Satan and instead work to raise the living standards of families worldwide. The Reverend also touches upon how the World Bank encourages country to worsen working conditions and some research on smoking pot and driving.
Globalism Destroys America: 10 Reasons Why The World Trade Organization Is Bad For The United States Economy.
Today, 153 nations representing more than 97% of total world trade are members of the WTO. It has been largely responsible for the explosion in world trade that we have witnessed over the past several decades. In fact, world trade is now over 15 times larger than it was 50 years ago. But is this a good thing? No, it is not...
wto: hands off our natural environment!
The present trading system promotes the free movement of goods, services and capital as a goal in itself, rather than ensuring that international trade promotes sustainable and equitable societies. As a result, current and proposed trade rules and agreements as administered by the World Trade Organization (WTO) encourage unsustainable resource use and an inequitable distribution of resources, and can conflict directly with local, national and international environmental laws...
One in five families have suffered losses of more than 25 percent of their income. This is inescapably a moral issue. We cannot consider ourselves civilized -- never mind Judeo-Christian -- if the rest of us do not respond forcefully to the suffering of our fellow Americans. They have lost their jobs and often their homes, while corporate profits and executive salaries reach obscene levels. This is failed policy!...

O Foolish Yogi

You tricked people by keeping your hair long and unkempt, drugging yourself into those deep trances. You made false pilgrimages in a show for the gods and goddesses.
O Yogi! In your greed, you forgot the discipline of Yoga. You did not love Truth so all your years of hard work produced nothing.
O foolish mind! You cheat others when you pretend to be one of the holy.
You can not reach bliss just by wearing their clothes.
You worship stones, but God is not inside a stone
Empty religion does not grow fruit. You have wasted years worshipping stones and became weaker because of it. By acting holy without meaning it, you achieved nothing but were not ashamed
O foolish intellect! You did not understand the True Spirit and have wasted your life in vain.|21|.
- Guru Gobind Singh (Swayyas, Dasam Granth)
Guru Gobind Singh was the 10th and last of the Sikh Gurus. Since his sons were all killed by India’s mughul invaders, he turned over religious guidance to a written text, the Adi Granth. In its current form as the Guru Granth Sahib, it features the work of Sikh Gurus but also includes verses from a variety of prophets and poets of several other religions too. It is revered as one of the world’s greatest spiritual texts even today.
We should all be inspired by the value Guru Gobind Singh gave to literature. He not only compiled the definitive Guru Granth Sahib but also wrote a great deal of his own poetry in a variety of languages. And if you visit India, you can visit his poetry court (Kabi Darbar in Paonta Sahib) where his appointed scholars collected and transcribed an extensive collection of classic literature, myths and folk tales from Punjab and other surrounding lands. Their work was very likely the greatest epic work of Punjabi literature, but is stuck in controversy. Some claim that the entire collection was lost. Others claim that only a part were lost but some stories were compiled with the Guru’s own writings into the Dasam Granth.

Meditaion 43 It is wiser to play the fool

It is wiser to play the fool.
Consider the Lynx: She pretends she is blind.
Disguise your ears -- now you are deaf.
Be polished, but look dull among the dull.
And you will survive.'
- Lal Ded
Maybe the time has come to challenge yourself with the words of Lal Ded. She is one of the few female mystics of her time (1320-1389) and also one of the few spiritual leaders who defied classification into one of the major religions of her time. Some say she blended Islamic and Hindu thought. Others say she brought a humanist view to Indian religion. Still others see her as the standard of post-Buddhist Kashmiri philosophy.
You may want to explore each of these possibilities as you study her careful metaphors. All I ask is that you do study them. She spoke clear simple words but carried a powerful message. She gives guidelines for life, but continuously seeks the meaning of the afterlife.

Blame Game

So today I want to talk about the BLAME GAME. Recently I have had several wonderful opportunities of people blaming others for their behaviors. Family members blaming family members, spouses blaming spouses, and I knew a person who lacked complete compassion and understanding but he blamed the people who had compassion and understanding because of his lack of it. Each time I witness blame, I feel good about who I am because I know that taking responsibility and not blaming others mean I responsibility for my actions. It means we are accountable, and accountability is the signature of self. I love the reminders that life gives me and it keeps me on my toes and is an ever reminder that I need to take responsibility for myself, my feelings and my actions.

Stop It
![]()
Why do we do things that are not good for us? Some say it is human nature, others say it is habit but no matter what you call it, it can be stopped by using the simple skill and two words that are STOP IT. Truth is the basic life skill called "stopping it" isn’t typically taught in families, schools, businesses, or at church so we never think just to stop the negative self talk. The good news is that stopping it doesn't have to be filled with intense emotion, tearful confessions, and drama. It doesn't have to cost a fortune or require the strength of an super hero . And best of all, it doesn’t have to involve suffering and It's called simply learning to art of saying STOP IT.
